Transgender Activist To Run For Colombian Congress

From:  Colombia Reports

Radio producer and transgender rights activist Shelcy Sanchez may make history by becoming the first transsexual to win a seat in the Colombian Congress.

Sanchez, who is vocal in her support of gay and transgender rights in Colombia, registered her candidacy for the House of Representatives in her home department of Valle del Cauca.

“My aspiration is born from a conviction and a necessity: to show that we can achieve a destiny away from living in the closet and seeing ourselves forced into prostitution. However, those that are obliged to work in the sex industry should enjoy dignified working conditions … with access to social security and the healthcare system” explained the political candidate.

Sanchez is already a recognized spokesperson in Colombia’s LGBT community, producing the country’s only gay radio station and until recently acting as vice president to the Fundacion Transmujer, which supports the rights of transgender Colombians.

Her political candidacy is thought to have the support of over 25,000 members of the gay community.

“We may not be manly,” the candidate joked, “but we are many.”

Seeking New Performers for Pacific Northwest Tour!

Seeking New Performers for Pacific Northwest Tour!

Greetings all!

We’ve been adding new stuff to the website, and while there is still more on the way, you can now find a staff page to see the fabulous folks who are working behind the scenes, and a merchandise page where you can order Tranny Roadshow loot directly from us. And then here’s the really exciting news….

We’re gearing up for the 2010 Pacific Northwest tour of the Tranny Roadshow, and we’re looking for performers who want to dazzle audiences with their trans-tastic brilliance! Here’s the deal:

WHO WE ARE:
The Tranny Roadshow is a constantly evolving, multimedia, performance art extravaganza. It is a modern variety show comprised entirely of artists who self-identify as transgender. Past performances have included poetry, hip-hop, short films, storytelling, dance, puppetry, rock music, comedy, opera, dramatic monologues, stage magic, and much more.

Each performance is accompanied by a display of stationary art (i.e. paintings and sculpture), but the focus is on the live acts, a unique evening of entertainment where transpeople demonstrate that we are whole people, multi-faceted and infinitely talented. The show is not explicitly about gender, but is carried out in the belief that expressions of gender and expressions of self are inseparable. For more information about the Roadshow, its history and its aspirations, see www.trannyroadshow.com

WHAT WE WANT:
Transpeople have access to unique layers of perspective on the human experience. Through sharing these experiences, we want our audiences to be entertained, challenged, educated, disturbed, and amused. We want them both laughing and thinking. We might change their lives, or we might just change their evenings – but whatever we do, we’ll do it with flair. We’re interested in a range of media: spoken word, music, dance/movement, and performance art of all kinds.

In seeking to reflect many different versions of the trans experience, we strive for diversity not only of gender identity/expression, but of race, ethnicity, age, class, region of origin, ability, family structure, sexual orientation, educational background, religion, etc. All people who identify themselves as transgender are welcome to submit.

We are currently looking for 4-6 people who will join us to share their lives through their live art for the entirety of the Pacific Northwest tour, which will begin on April 14th or 15th and conclude on April 26th. (Later we may also seek performers who are interested in joining select shows in their own hometowns. Please only submit now if you can participate in the entire tour.)

We are also accepting submissions of short films and of visual art to display.

WHAT YOU GET:
The Tranny Roadshow will be touring April 14th (or 15th) through 26th, 2010, with a show nearly every night. We are performing only in the Pacific Northwest (WA, OR, CA, ID, and MT.) Venues will be varied and may include galleries and coffee shops, as well as theaters and college campuses. All transportation will be provided by the Roadshow, including airfare to/from Seattle and local transportation by car or van. The Roadshow will also provide all accommodations and meals. You
will receive a cash honorarium (exact amount still to be determined, but no less than $300), and you are welcome to sell any merchandise that you may have. Most importantly, you get to have a really great time!

HOW TO GET IT:
All people who identify themselves as transgender are invited to submit any kind of performance art. Auditions may be held live – either via phone or in person in Maine – but this isn’t necessary. We will gladly accept text, photos, video, and/or audio recordings.

Along with your performance submission, please tell us a bit about yourself. This will help us to ensure that we are giving voice to people with divergent experiences, as well as showcasing a variety of performance styles. Include as much information as you’d like, in order to let us form a well-rounded picture of you. You could be a perfect addition to the Tranny Roadshow 2010 – you just have to tell us why…

Note: If you have ever performed with or auditioned for the Tranny Roadshow, you are not required to send a new audition piece, although you may do so if your performance style has changed significantly. You do, however, need to let us know if you want to be considered for this tour.

*** We are accepting submissions until February 20th. ***
